Contemporary

Contemporary dance is a dance genre that developed during the mid-twentieth century with the purpose of breaking the conventional style of dance. Contemporary dance is an expressive dance style that focuses on the freedom of movement, allowing dancers to connect their minds and body.

In a contemporary dance class, dancers discover different ways of using their bodies and movements to explore emotions and energy. It can be danced to different genres of music and is often mixed with other dance styles such as modern dance, jazz, and some martial arts like capoeira. Unlike popular beliefs, you do not need to be flexible to dance contemporary.

At EDS we currently have two different teachers for this style. Albi, who teaches Beginners, Intermediate, and Theresa - Jazz Dance and Advanced. Their classes differ in their unique approach to Contemporary. In case you are interested in learning more, the videos of both teachers are available on our Instagram.

All contemporary dance courses at EDS are on a weekly basis and one (academic) year courses.

BEGINNERS

In this class, students will learn the basic elements of contemporary dance such as turns, jumps, and floor work in order to explore the use of their bodies and movements. The class will often start with warm-ups to improve flexibility and strengths. Choreography will be worked on every few weeks, in addition to different improvisation exercises.

Intermediate and advanced

The intermediate and advanced classes are intended for dancers with prior knowledge of contemporary dance that are seeking for bigger challenges. Dancers are more encouraged to go beyond their comfort zones through daring improvisation exercises. In comparison to the beginners’ class, more technical choreographies will be taught in this level.
